Radiotherapy is the medical use of ionizing radiation (x rays, gamma emitting isotopes and electrons) to attack cancer cells, by targeting tumors as accurately as possible using all available modern technology to spare adjacent healthy tissue and organs as much as possible. There are two radiotherapy modalities: external radiotherapy, where the radiation source is placed at a distance of one meter from the patient and brachytherapy in which radioactive sources are placed directly inside the target volume.
At the Centro Javeriano de Oncología brachytherapy is delivered using a microSelectron high-dose-rate remote afterloading system by which a very small Iridium-92 source moves through pre-positioned catheters within the tumor volume or target.
Conditions such as cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, skin cancer, esophageal cancer, bronchial cancer, among other, are commonly treated with high-dose-rate brachytherapy.
Stereotactic Radiosurgery is a special external radiotherapy technique used at the Centro Javeriano Oncología to treat brain lesions, tumors, metastases, arteriovenous malformations (AVM) and others small lesions located in an anatomic site with difficult access to the surgeon.
Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)) is an advanced high-precision radiotherapy modality that uses computer controlled x-ray accelerators to deliver accurate radiation doses to a malign tumor or specific areas within the tumor. The Centro Javeriano Oncología has been pioneering this type of technique for the last three years.
The Centro Javeriano Oncología has its own dosimeter to characterize, calibrate and permanently monitor radiation beams and radiation sources within a quality assurance framework following the International Basic Safety Standards for Protection against Ionizing Radiation and the Safety of Radiation Sources of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Our Chemotherapy Unit hosts a fully equipped outpatient chemotherapy infusion area, with comfortable reclineable chairs, in which patients rest while oncology nurses, administer the treatments. Moreover, we have a centralized laminar airflow cabin for drug preparation, directed and controlled by a female pharmaceutical chemist specifically trained for this task. We also have a procedure/treatment room to collect bone marrow specimens and to perform myelograms, lumbar punctures and intratecal chemotherapies.
The Centro Javeriano Oncología also offers treatment for orphan diseases including: Gaucher´s Disease, Fabry´s disease, betathalassemia mayor anemia, among other.
